The following are free/open source software packages that ease the life
of CIO's and network administrators.
They do their best to transparently and automatically keep track of the
exiting hardware and software, providing up-to-date inventories of the
existing hardware characteristics, installed operating systems and
software package (including versions and names of the registered owners)
They are good examples of reliable and industry grade software that
perform valuable otherwise time-consuming tasks.
1. OCS Inventory NG (This is, for now, our no. 1 choice )
OCS (Open Computers and Softwares) Inventory is a free/open source
application designed to help a network administrators keep track of the
hardware (computers, printers, interface cards, etc.) and the software
packages installed their network.
For instance it can be used to find out how many PCs have a given
processor type or a certain amount of memory, or on how many computers a
given version of a named software package has been installed.

GLPI is a is a free/open source software package to support software,
hardware and resources inventory management.
Much like OCS, with which it is compatible, it has many functions which
make network administrators life easier. It also includes a
job/request tracking system with mail notification and methods to build
a database with basic information about your network topology. It
provides precise inventory of all the technical resources (DBMS based)
and management and
history of the maintenance actions and the bound procedures. It is
dynamic and is directly connected to the users, who can post
requests to the technicians.
